Alexandra

Any man who keeps working is not a failure. He may not be a great writer, but if he applies the old-fashioned virtues of hard, constant labor, he’ll eventually make some kind of career for himself as writer.

There are simple things that remind us of our responsibility, not our fans and readers, but to ourselves to write daily. Although we can not  do it for an extended period of time, the simplicity of a sentence or perhaps several, will give us the satisfaction to say I making my way to my destination.

What do you keep near to remind you to write daily?

The pages are still blank, but there is a miraculous feeling of the words being there, written in invisible ink and clamoring to become visible.  ~Vladimir Nabokov

Clamoring, clamoring over and over again. Echoed in the thoughts that become vivid pictures in the mind. In this lair they reign. Pen in hand, notebook wide open. Stares and more stares. A shy instant, not wanting to caress it with ink. But they are there, even thou they can’t be seen.

A page is torn for the words are not right, a ball of paper stained in ink is thrown away. A cat bounces out of the shadow of a chair, takes the ball, rips it apart.

Another pause, and the mind wonders off to distant places that are not the ones it needs to be. A sigh releases the feelings inside. Pen drops, the hand gives up. Still the mind lingers on top of that blank paper and imagines the words coming alive. The pen finds it’s way towards the hand again and a word is solidified in ink. From there another and another. A spark is felt inside the heart that raises with each letter formed. The mind concentrates and dictates the hand, while the soul is witness as a chapter of a story comes to live.

~Vladimir Nabokov

Vladimir Nabokov

It is necessary to write, if the days are not to slip emptily by.  How else, indeed, to clap the net over the butterfly of the moment For the moment passes, it is forgotten; the mood is gone; life itself is gone.  That is where the writer scores over his fellows:  he catches the changes of his mind on the hop.  ~Vita Sackville-West

Vita Sackville-West can not explain better my lacck of writing in Mink. I know I have been out, but I love that you comprehend that is because I’m catching “the changes of” my “mind on the hop”. But tomorrow I will return, I know in my native language, with the second part of the fourth chapter of ‘The children of Oshmdwa’. Believe me I’m working on putting up the English version of the chapters I owe you, and I will. For now I leave you be and go back to my world of fiction which is going through some mayor changes.

I have gone back to the begging, it had to be done, the story came to a holt and the future I pictured for the characters would not come to be. Maybe it was good like that, but not for this writer. The future of this characters are linked to each other even if they hated each other. To sad for them, I’m the forger of their lives.

Until tomorrow, my friends, I’m back to my fiction world and some laundry and some motherly duties. Thanks for being here and letting my words touch your life.

“Books want to be born: I never make them.  They come to me and insist on being written, and on being such and such.  ~Samuel Butler

Quote taken from The Quote Garden

This are the words that best explain my thoughts on writing a story or book. Samuel Butler hit the head of the nail with this one, for in the past he has read my heart, for books exist and they choose their word smith. We are just storytellers waiting for the story to choose us and whisper in our ears the story that needs to be born to reality.

“You must stay drunk on writing so reality cannot destroy you.  ~Ray Bradbury” (quote from Quote Garden). A few days back a good friend, whom I respect and sharish her opinion, wrote to me to not forget to come back to reality know and then. As a fiction writer my head is always returning to that place I’m creating, to the characters that need more, to the dialogue in need of feelings that will take the reader into a journey that will capture them, make them hate or love a character.

As I write my new book of fiction and fantasy I find myself in and out of reality, most of the time I return to my mortality because of the need of others. In this case of my three year old with whom my writing does not compete, it comes second to him and to my daughter and my husband. They come first and for them I rejoin humanity in this world of reality that does not destroy me for I am being sorrounded by love even thou words that have to be written are transcribed in my mind.

I think I’m declaring here and now that I, as Ray Bradbury said, am drunk with writing. My mind always finds itself seeking constantly the perfect settings, the action in reality that will come to be written for a character. Reality is but the setting I go trhough in order to gain knowledge that can be turn into fiction or fantasy. I did not realize that until I read the quote on friday morning! It is in this truth that I find peace thinking of the feelings that arise from me everytime I day dream and I wonder off silently. Is serenety like that one gain from a prayer, what it feels like when I’m drunk with writing. Is who I am, I will not change it for the world!

“There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven:a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot, a time to kill and a time to heal, a time to tear down and a time to build, a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance, a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them, a time to embrace and a time to refrain, a time to search and a time to give up, a time to keep and a time to throw away, a time to tear and a time to mend, a time to be silent and a time to speak, a time to love and a time to hate, a time for war and a time for peace. What does the worker gain from his toil I have seen the burden God has laid on men.”

Eclesiastés 3:1-10

I read this everytime I’m looking for an answer to a question or questions. Hope it helps you too!

“Have patience with everything unresolved in your heart
and try to love the questions themselves …
Don’t search for the answers,
which could not be given to you now,
because you would not be able to live them.
And the point is, to live everything.
Live the questions now.
Perhaps then, someday far in the future,
you will gradually, without even noticing it,
live your way into the answer.”

Rainer Maria Rilke

I just love this quote, it is mindblowing. Enjoy it! From Marianne Williamson’s books ‘Return to love”:

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous Actually, who are you not to be You are a child of God. Your playing small doesn’t serve the world. There’s nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we’re liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”

I know I owe you friends a little apology for my silence these past weeks. Thankfully I had pre-schedule some posts to have you entertained, of which I totally forgot and was surprise to see.

A dear love one passed away suddenly on the 18th; her parting took us by surprise. We’ll miss her, but will always remember her. My eyes tear up just to think that she will not be with us, but my heart rejoices thinking she is watching over us.

I know today is not Monday, I have not forgotten and I was going to do this yesterday, but Hurricane Earl decided to pay us a visit. Thankfully he just said hello from the distance and did not do much damage. So here it is, Mondays Quote on a cloudy and breezy Tuesday!

I’m sharing the words of a woman loved my many and taken from us too soon, but the times we had with her will last us a lifetime. This quote is taken from her last facebook status and summarizes her joyful life.

For you Norma, my dear mother-in-law, who loved this blog, enjoyed reading it and whom I will always remember and love. I will pass your words to your grandchildren who love you.

Enjoy life, love and live with passion. Memories will hold you thru bad times and there will always be a story to tell the grandkids.” –Norma I. Santiago Santiago.

I will try, read well, I’ll try. “What is it that you’ll try?” is the question that comes immediately and vivid to your thoughts. This is what I’ll try every Monday on Mink. A quote, ‘una cita’ like we say in Spanish, that has and serves as a written guide to this journey of mine. Whether is to fortify or that had slap the face of a writer, or words just spoken to my ear from those who make this journey of mine a reason to smile or to think the journey over or just to teach.

The weekend was tumultuous and while I found an escape between the brick walls of The Northern Island alongside my little ones. It wasn’t until yesterday that I found words that thought me how to deal with a human characteristic: “inside wrath”. They come from one of my favorite catholic authors, Priest Ignacio Larrañaga, who through his writing and exercises has thought me to have a better praying life and commute with my Creator. No, is not to preach but to share.

From his book Itinerary towards God, I found in the title Homage to silence these words:

“…the silence of the mind corresponds to the peace of the heart”

Also at the end,

“It is always the same: to silence the mind and surrender”

Itinerary towards God

Good practices for when the inside wrath or rage, as you wish to call it, takes over us. Silence the mind, your inner thoughts, surrender it in the hands of Who will give you peace, breath the serenity silence has given and live. And if you have time do as I did, dance to the music of some plena, or whatever you may like.
